The concept of global domination/pleasing everyone was and always will be just a myth.
People will like what you do, others will hate it with a passion. Don't let this dishearten you from chasing your dreams, let it be a lesson.
Turn Lovers into Stalkers:
Rather than focusing on changing haters into lovers, you should focus on turning lovers into stalkers. What I mean by stalkers is not a creepy admirer but the same word without the s (talkers). You will be surprised how in the era of 'marketing', word of mouth proves to be king.
What would you rather? Have alot of people thinking that you are 'ok' or being amazing to a smaller audience? Let me put this another way, would you prefer being surrounded by alot of people who pretend to care or have individuals who are willing to go out of their way to help you shape the 'bigger picture'?
Who are you more likely to be influenced by?
It is like the old saying 'Quaility over quantity'.
A thing to remember is that bad news tends to travel 10 times faster then good, so instead of focusing on new customers/audiences focus on the ones that you already have. Make their experience the best it can be, in turn they will tell someone who would be crazy not to want the same vip treatment. This will only equal an accelerated organic growth.
So how do you go about turning 'lovers into stalkers' ?
You do this by creating what Seth Godin calls a 'purple cow'. The thinking behind this is, if you were driving past a field full of cows you may have a quick glance but they are just cows. What would you do if in that field you saw a purple cow? Odds are you would pull over take pictures and use the ocassion as a talking point for years to come.
Going back on my first point of pleasing everyone being a myth, Seth Godin proposes that 'tribes' are the future. By tribes he means a community of like minded individuals, who all contribute to the big picture. Here is a video of Seth talking about his concept of 'tribes' in more detail:
Is there a problem in your life that you want to solve?
Create a tribe!
We all have unique fields of skill and pockets of passion,by staying true to these assets you will ensure an audience that is 'quality over quantity'.
One person can't change the world but they can be the catalyst for change. You can come up with an idea, pass it on , then it will eventually get passed on and evolve into being.
The way to make things grow is by making them remarkable (worth a remark). All I ask from you is to be the best 'you' possible, I'm sure that version of yourself will be pretty remarkable.
Interesting Fact: On the same date I wrote this post in 1907 the first cabs with taxi meteres began operating in London.
